Mentoring > Sponsorship Program

The Sponsorship Mentoring Program of UMHC RC offers families or single individuals a unique way to volunteer their time and talents to the children. The families who become involved in this program develop personal relationships with a child who has been matched with them. The main purpose of the program is to provide the resident with the opportunity to interact with positive role models and participate in positive activities. Many of our residents have never been involved with a positive family situation and the Sponsorship Program allows the children to be in a setting in which they are valued as members of a group.

There is no set formula for how the sponsor and child interaction develops. Our only requirement is that a commitment of at least one contact per month throughout the child's placement be maintained. A major benefit for a resident in the Sponsorship Program is the chance to "get away" from the daily demands placed upon them in our therapeutic environment. We have found that residents who participate in the Sponsorship Program often renew their energy in working on their treatment goals and have an improved sense of self.
