Mentoring > Read Aloud Program

The Read Aloud Mentoring Program was put into effect a few years ago to help our children develop better reading skills. When a child struggles with reading, chances are they will struggle in all areas of academics.

The staff at UMHC RC put into practice a philosophy designed by Jim Trelease known as Read Aloud. It is believed that reading aloud not only improves reading skills but it also improves listening skills, word recognition, comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. It not only helps the child academically but it also helps build a positive social relationship with an adult which so many of our residents lack. We require a commitment of one hour per week - it is rewarding for both the child and the mentor on so many levels!
