Emergency Shelter > Referral Information

The UMHC Emergency Shelter provides temporary care for children who have difficulties functioning in their own home, a foster family home, a community group home, or other types of community based services.

 The program is designed to provide services to children who meet one or more of the following criteria:
-Dependent, neglected, and/or abused
-Status Offenders
-Emotionally disturbed, but not psychotic
-Pre-delinquent/Delinquent

 The UMHC Emergency Shelter has established the following guidelines for the selection of children in the admission process.
-Children should be between the ages of eight and eighteen
-It is preferred that children should have an IQ of 70 or higher
-Children must be "treatable in an open setting", in that he/she can manage a routine shelter life with requiring constant supervision
-Children are required to attend school while residing at the shelter

 The needs of some youth will clearly be better served at other emergency or detention type facilities. Not accepted for our services are those children:
-With severe mental of physical disorders
-Who are aggressive to the point where he/she presents a threat to the physical safety of themselves or others
-Experiencing a psychotic episode
-Currently intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs
-Actively suicidal
-Who have a history of fire setting
-Certain types of sexual predators
-Who are pregnant

The UMHC Emergency Shelter for Youth will not refuse a child based upon his/her race, religion, creed, or nationality.

In the event of an emergency or crisis situation where the safety of other residents or staff is compromised, we may request the offending child be removed from our facility. Recommendations about future placements will be available at the request of the county.
