Why a Capital Campaign?

As Bishop Jane Allen Middleton said in her reflections on this campaign, “We have a wonderful legacy of hope that has been received by all those who have gone before us and who’ve given generously. Now it is up to us to support this work.”

The “Building our Children’s Future Campaign” for the United Methodist Home for Children is a capital fund raising effort to generate the necessary resources to construct and furnish two new children’s cottages and a campus center. Phase One of the project is estimated at three million dollars. We have encountered an outpouring of support, but the need is so great. We are asking churches to prayerfully consider what they can do to help with this project. We are committed to an excellent program and providing the best care available for children who are placed at UMHC. We need you to join with us!

The gray stone buildings that grace our property have been home to thousands of children throughout the years. They have weathered countless storms. And while the buildings remain beautiful from a distance, sadly, they are beginning to show their age.

Four of the six cottages being used in the residential program were built in the mid 1920s. The buildings are three stories, have steep staircases, and narrow hallways. There are eight to ten residents in each cottage and children must share bedrooms. The design of the new cottages (a one story building with individual bedrooms, a great room, and a youth counselor station) lends itself to increased supervision, enhanced safety, and more privacy for our residents, many of whom come to us with peer problems and sexual issues.

A campus center would be a very welcome addition to our agency as well. Currently, we have less than adequate recreational facilities. There is no building large enough on campus to accommodate all our residents to participate in recreational activities. All special activities – such as our annual Thanksgiving dinner – must be held off-grounds.

Your participation is critical as we move forward with the “Building our Children’s Future Campaign.” In the near future, we will introduce this campaign to the community. As in every Children’s Home endeavor, the first question raised by the community is, “What is your church doing to support your project?”. Those outside our organization will view the campaign’s necessity and relevance in direct relation to church involvement. We are hoping for 100% church participation.

In Matthew 25:40 Jesus said, “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” We have a wonderful opportunity to honor Christ and provide help for those least able to help themselves. Please join with us. We are grateful for your kindness towards the children.
